pts WANT ADS DIAL 6411 TflE BXNdOR DAILY NEWS MONDAY JUNfl 1931 13 mmmmm awiME MOVING DAY ON PICKERING SQUARE Passing of Famous Old Market Place (jgllG SQUARE MEAT CARTS suspend business Proprietors0 Sell Their Foodstuffs in (tails of the New Public Establishments at Old Locations for for Farmers in a i 1 that of Pickering Square on the petition of Henry A Wood of Wood Bishop and others On July 6 1863 on petition ot Wiggins Hill prominent Bangor citizen and others the name of the northeast end of Pickering Square was designated as Mercantile Square and that portion la still Informally known by that name to the older residents Along In the Pickering Square became the popular place for assembling of farmers for the sale of their produce chickens meat cord wood boughs for winter banking of houses and other lines of business the farmers and others driving Into the square In the morning and remaining until afternoon or until their goods cre sold RENDEZVOUS FOR FARMERS The farther end of Pickering Square became the rendezvous for farmers with loads of hay and straw and that portion of what was officially designated In its entirety by the cltv eoun-ril some months ago as Pickering Square became locally known aa Hav-market Square and is so called by many people to this day Recently an investigation of the city records was made to the legal name of Haymarket Square It being lound that there was nothing in the records to Justify the olfl-clal designation of Haymarket Square so It was ron luded that the name had been applied by local custom and not by act of the city council In order to avoid any confusion In the future the city counetl a tew months ago went on record as giving the nsme of Ptekering Squsre to the entire section extending from Broed street to Independent street (Continued on Fsge 14) business In Pickering Square and men of the same family and name descendants or relatives have continued the business there ever since That Immediate section ot the city has witnessed many changes and improvements since 1851 when the city council first took actioR to make a large square by the removal of old buildings and the discontinuance of streets which were landmarks In-the old days the present generation for the most part probably never having even heard of them by their names Pickering Square as now seen had I many frame buildings in its present limits and there were streets known as Wall street and street which are now no more On June 27 1851 an order was introduced In the city council to widen Ft'-h Wall Water and Independent sheets according to the plan of Moses Hodgdon on pntition of George I Pickering and others Mercantile Square was the appellation for the space between the I Charles Hayward A Co establishment 1 at Broad street and Pickrring Square and the Ounham-Hanson hardware esiahltshment and edlolnlng stores On Julv 28 IBM the -ttv rounetl i ordered the street engineers to set in the matter of widening and to estimate the damage and benettts if any resulting i On Aug 4 1851 the street engt-!
