13 at the newly renovated historic Society Hall Ballroom 193 Exchange St The ballroom was built in 1892 and hosted the Bangor Symphony in the early 1900s The ball will feature music of Brian Catell Cantarella School of Dance with Madeline Cantarella Culpo and Andrea Stark a former director of the Ram Island Dance Company and now director of the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor Montanaro also studied with the Joffrey School of Ballet and has danced professionally with the Ohio Ballet and the Darmstadt Opera Ballet in Germany She is a principal dancer with the Portland Ballet Company in Portland and teaches at the affiliated school The Portland School of Ballet She also teaches ballet movement and mime throughout New England and Europe On Oct 5 recipients of this Traditional Arts Master Awards will demonstrate then-art forms at the meeting of the Maine Arts Commission beginning at 9 am at the Black Bear Inn in Orono The public is welcome The 2008 Masters and Apprentices are: Master Watie Akins Penob scot elder from Brewer and Apprentice James Neptune Akins is a drummer and singer who earns a living as a civil engineer His father was a musician and his mother Little Elk performed as a dancer and singer on stages in the United States and Europe He is interested in recovering and preserving detailed aspects of Penobscot music and drumming that have been obscured by influences from Native American tribes farther west Master Donald Roy master fiddler player of Gorham and Apprentice Matthew Lamare Master Greg Boardman and Apprentice Jasmine Chick Boardman of Auburn began his musical life as a rock and roll artist but he soon found himself under the spell of the fiddle in 1970 He learned many of his tunes from master fiddlers including Lucien Matthieu Mattheiu coincidentally is the uncle of another of this awardees Don Roy Masters John Connors and Dave Wylie and Apprentice Chase Jackson boat makers In 2006 Connors and Wylie collaborated to build a batteau
