8 Thursday November 2 2010 THE V1 1 KlY Our Business Business civic leaders back Maine Center plan Volunteer Honored A In particular the Friends of the Maine Center urge the council to understand that the convention center portion of the project accounts for more than half of the job growth and economic activity associated with it While it requires a substantial financial commitment building the Maine Center is smart from a fiscal standpoint the Friends group said because the city Is losing as much as $700000 annually on an obsolete auditorium complex because It can't attract enough events conventions and advertising dollars Further members of the Friends group said they believe the plan now under consideration represents a fantastic community asset one that will build on great quality of life and cement its position as the commercial center and gateway for eastern Maine "In 2003 the voters of Bangor approved the development of Hollywood Slots with the explicit understanding that the city's revenues from that venture would help pay for a new event and convention center" said W'oodward "Now is the time for the City Council to fulfill that promise and invest in the future why we say build it now build It right" Friends of the Maine Center include: Michael Aube Eastern RANCOR With the slogan "Build it now build it right" a group of civic and business leaders have announced their support for a new event and convention center In Bangor The Friend of the Maine Center includes many of leading businesspeople organizers said as well as other community leaders who have come together to urge the Bangor City Council to move ahead with the proposed project as soon as possible Citing an economic impact study that shows such a facility creating more than 400 jobs and returning $26 million annually to the local economy the group held a press conference to outline its reasons fur wanting to see the project move forward "The current auditorium Is more than a half century old and it was obsolete on the day it opened" said Mark Woodward former executive editor of the Bangor Daily News and co-chairman of the Friends of the Maine Center "If we move quickly we will have the opportunity to give Bangor a facility that will meet the needs of the community for generations grow the tax base and boost our economy" Members of the Friends group believe that a new event and convention center Is well within the means and that authorizing its construction now is in the lst interests of Bangor taxpayers "We have a unique opportunity to put the city's share of revenues from the Hollywood Slots casino to u--e in a way that will not only provide Bangor with a first class facility but improve the fiscal health of the city by expanding its tax base" said Miles Thi-eman also a co-chairman of the Friends group and president and CKO of Affiliated Healthcare Systems of IUngor Woodward Theeman and other suppliers of the project said it was imjxrtant for the city to move ahead with construction in coming weeks The Bangor Daily News reported on Friday that architect Don Dethlefs and representatives from Ctanbro Corp have presented the city with plans and cost projections of between $70 million and $80 million Cianbro said that groundbreaking could take place in May That date would require a decision by the city in January Current economic conditions make this an advantageous time for the city to commit to the project according to Friends of the Maine Center as interest rates and construction costs are low If the City Council delays a decision it could end up costing the city millions more to build the project the group added Dale Hamilton (left) Community Health and Counseling Services executive director and Charles Hutchins (right) CHCS board
