The devil can bq infamousin 5th avenue castles, or in' Broadway stores but he weaves his webs in stilt lower depth. He puts up signs for Sailors Homes, lodging houses, many of which are mere covers for robbery in broad day light. He assumes any garb that may best serve him His most prominent web is in those social basement mud paddles known a the Concert saloons.

I have- refrained from the mention of the female gamblers and gamlsg houses, because they are less known, and for the reason that, when a woman falls from innocence to infamy, nothing can lift her out of the lowest sloughs and she naturally belongs in the cob webs. There are fash ionable ladies gamiog houses, where "heads of families vie with their lords and maters in the rain of generations to follow. But as womaa can the best and most exalted, so can she be the worst and vilest. Hence she ik found more frequently than men in the underground sinks of Iniquity. She gambles, picks pockets, with more effrontery than tbe boldest men.

She has loss fear of law, after losing her respect for pub lie opinion than ha the stronger devil in pantaloons. So she is ever the evil genius who presides at those seductive gambling hells where men are mercilessly drugged and robbed and kicked into tbe gatter to find themselves a best they can. Opes blood chills to see these glaring dens ones pen faints in the attempt to describe them. They are so far below common decency and honesty that the bottomless pit can be but a step downward. He is found most frequently the lower down town thoroughfaresf where population.ia dense, the streets ere blockaded, and business is driving. Years ago, tbe operations of this barehanded Satan were performed most exten sively through the medfum of Mock Auction Shops.

Many of these were scattered np and down Broadway and the Bowery. Peter Funk, the nutioneer, kept open door. With great dignity he stood behind the counter -mounted on a stool. At the junction of Broadway and fifth Avenue, occupying the whole block between 23d and 24th streets, with its many stories of white marble, tbe Eifth Avenue Hotel stands as a monument of wealth.

It looks down upon Madison Square ia front, where poor Eora McFlimsy was supposed to have bad no change of duds1 where magnificent mansions are built and occupied by the best society. It looks at one side down Fifth 'Avenue, and at the other up that renowned thoroughfare, where dollars are as the dust under our feet. It looks askant down Broadway, and over its left shoulder up the same great artery of business and accumulating gains. It turns upon either flank and looks along 23d and 24th streets to the east and to the west, with their costly private residences, and aristocratic boarding houses. At first sight you say, isnt all this grand! "Where all is so rich, so beautiful, so apparently harmonious, surely all should be inclined to honest virtue.

The eye confirms what the property holders and boardinghouse keepers (who see only twenty-five dollars a week per head in tbe passing Btream of humanity) advertise: Neighborhood first class. Having seen the shell, let us probe that, and look beyond. On 24th street Insight of the great hotel, a few steps from the corner, observe that house. Nothing striking about it nothing to distinguish it from the other stately edifices that abound here. Its elegant lace curtains hanging lazily over its great glass eyes, its costly carpets and easy lounges, its general air of peacefulness, give no sign.

Yet in these parlors nightly hundreds of thousands of dollars change hands upon the turn of a card, or upon the feverish uncertainty of the dice cup, or by the more frequent certainty of the playera skill against a novice at the boards. Men go in and come away quietly as from their rooms. Their steps may be light or heavy, their teeth may reflect pleasantly in the gas light, or they may he set firmly in a case of pale and trembling lips, they may go away heavy with gold and certificates, or they may be penniless. They are soon gone, and are thought of no more; others come and go as though none had been before. Were a sign over the door, it would read Faro.

proprietor, the Honorable John Morrissy, F. M. whose chief backers are the Manhattan Clnb, and whose most audacious rival is the Honorable Ben. Wood, brother to Fernando, and luckier at Faro, because more pertinacious not so successful in politics because not so apt an actor of the character of Oily Gammon. Here the millionaires flip coppers for houses and lots, and stake pockets-full of greenbacks upon4every-day disputes.

A man with a few hundreds is laughed at. Time is most essentially money with thd -honorable fraternity who congregate here. If you have some thoasands you can Jamase them fpr a time if not you can go to some less- -pretentious establishment. Quantity being th principal recommendation to those kid-gloved devils, the quality of the game is limited. You can plank your paper on a game of chance, you can "bet your mosey on the bob-tailed nag, yon can entep pool in prize pommeling match, or yon can go your bottom dollar on the election.
