April 13 tf CONNECTICUT MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, General Grant in Camp A Washington correspondent of tne New York Post, has received from a military friend who has just passed some days at headquarters in Culpepper the following account of his visit and of the habits of the Lieutenant General General Grant messes with his staff in a house in the Tillage: and at his table sits familiarly every number of his military family. The expenses of the mess are div.ded am on? the ten not in equal proportions exactly, but ia a manner that is satisfactory to all.

There is not the slightest attempt at show or parade in the furniture and equipage; everything is for use and economy of trouble and space. The cookery is scanty and of the plainest, and the fare though sufficient in quantity, is just as homely as that of any thrifty and careful mechanic in your city. The events which In this country now press and crowd upn eaoh other with such startling rapidity appeal in tones ol strong monition to every ncs-cand and father in the land, and are calculated to pretent to his consideration with impressive emphasis the duty of providing for those for whse sos be nance and eomlort Hod has made him responsible. Whoever loves bis wife and children must now espeo ally feel anxious on their account, and doubtful as to their fate should he himse.f be taken sud deniy away. He knows that if the pressure oi the times bears hard upon a man in the fullness of his I 0 strength, it will be far more severe upon a woman 1 end onildren left at such a conjuncture without re source9 or protecror. Is it not now proper, more than ever before, that all with dependent families should take aavancage of the means whioh ssnranoa alone affords, and, by devoting a small part of their income, save themselves much anxiety, and secure to their wives and children comfort and independence offered. few a' Xyto -r- .1 Ready Cash Most important in I the Settlement of Estates, One of the most important benefits to be derived from Life Insurance is, that it enables the man oi large means, but of extended and varied business, to provide an amount of bxadt cash Immediately after his death, to be used by his family, either to meet their daily necessities, or to aid in olosiog up the estate to the bett advantage To this end some ol the richest men in the country have made large insurance on their lives, and the results are always salutary. Thousands of dollars have been saved in the closing of estates, ly means of a small amount of ready money. The records of our Courts will atteit to the truth of our proposition, that, on the other hand, thousands and teas of thou auds of dollars have been Jost, and estates utterly ruined, fjr the want of tbis small sum of ready money. Life Insurance provides a remedy for ail this; and a policy of Insurance on ihe life of the husoand, payable, as the law directs, to the wife and ohiidreo, dees not wait the law's delay, but oomes up promptly to the rescue of the hard earned estate ot the deceased. We say, thereiorc, to aiL rich and poor, secure wiiiiout daisy, tha buon hloh ill bo surely guar-1 antee a result so desirable, and a consummation 1 1 10x61108 OcWiLff III P.

There would be an end to all independence a brohen home, descent into poverty, the eold kindaers of relations, the reluctant charity of friends, the widow and the orphan undertaking any description of labor for the mere means of existence. At the table neither distilled liquor nor wine is permitted. The General will not have either about him, for his own or others ue. The inventory of the General's baggage when he made his brilliant campaign in tne rear of Vicksbusg is, I take it, well remembered a briar wood telescope and a tooth brush. In what re-latts to personal adornment and, outside the necessity of eating and personal comfort he has not gre enlarged his possessions, bis three stars indicate Lio exalted rank, but to say nothing of the charm which, in soldiers' eyes, these glittering marks of ank possess, I doubt ii there is a commissariat officer in his a my who is as plainlf clad as he His clothes are ora threadbare, and despite the steady brushing of his ser vnt, they will have an untidy no doubt, to the Generals habit of going everywhere and seting everything for himself.

The General un-ders ands the relation between cleanliness and godliness; but in his opinion, practically evinced there is as mucu of either in a flannel shirt as in one of linen of drawing room immacGlateness General Grant never swears. No man ia his camp has ever heard him give utterance to profanity many of its many forms. He rarely laughs, either; but he has a sort of grim humor which is not without its effect. 1 1 ia related as a part of the gossip of the front, that an officer attached to the Quartermaster's of his army, wanted, one wet day, to consult with the General in chief He is a believer in the old regime, and practiced what he was taught under McClellan. He had half a dozen miles to g6, more less so he ordered out his close carriage, and as it was likely that night would come before he could return, the lamps were trimmed and hung out on side of he driver's seat.

Then, with an escort of twelve dragoons, he started, happy, jo doubt, in the belief that he was proof against the descending rain. Approaching Culpepper, he met an ordinary looking man on horseback, attended only by an orderly. As he passed he recognized the Lieutenant General, who, in spite of the rain, was making his usual round in his usual quiet way. To descend from his carriage and salute his chief was but the work of an instant; but Grant, irritated by the style and pretension of his officer, was no hurry to see him gaiu tne shelter of his carriage roof again. Walk along with me a little, said the General, I want to talk with you.

With polished boots and unexceptional kids Mr Quartermaster did as he was bidden, and with touch of thaLgrimness to which I have referred the Generel led him through the muddiest parts of the road, and did not release him ill he wet to the skin as wet as the General. He was then dismissed with an admonition that will be remembered, though it was mteiiaeded with no oaths. Among them are three housewives, two pairs South Carolina steel fight ing gaffs, one 'Pentateuch Vindicated, one Phono graphic Odds and Ends, one Loves Labor Won, one Guesses at Truth, one Child at Home, soldiers' pocket book, one Key to Heaven, one ord-maiks, one set of teeth, artificial eyes, cne dis" tometer, artificial teet and silver plate, storm detector, grey nicker pills, lotion powders, association medicines, radical re enerators, medicines of almost every kind, Ac. It may interest Union soldiers who contemplate desertion to the rebels to know that all such de rters are sent to prison, either to be exchanged regular course, (and shot) or to remain there till tbe end of the war.

JA correspondent of tbe World, who professes to have a knowledge of rebel affairs, states from information reoeived from an old resident North Carolina, that ths confederates have in tbe Roanoke, Neuse and Tar rivers a fleet of twelve ironclad gunboas and rams; that their design is to take possession of all tbe Union ports on the Norih Carolina Coast, between Wilmington and Albemarle Sound, including Flymiutb, Washington and Newbern, after wnich the iron olad fleet is to sail round to fortress Monro, to co operate with the rebel General Lee in his projected offensive movement on the North. From Shbeveport Joel Bnrgess, a Federal prisoner, who lately escaped from Shreveport La, has ari ived at Little Rook, Ark and reports that at Shreveport he saw two gunbpata, one of which was iron-clad, called tbe Webb. There were, however, no gnns her, they having been taken oat to put upon tbe fortifications He also counted thirteen or fourteen transports. They have a go i pontoon bridge there and earth works to proteot it. But there are no fur tifleations to oppose a river attack.

The town isbuilt on a high bluff. The prisoners number about 600, including tbe crews of two gunboats, csptnred a year ago. They live in hats built by themselves. Tbe osmp inoladed about two acres, and was surronnded by a chain of sentinels. There were only irom eight to ten sentinels on relief.

Besides this guard the Confederate government kept a pack of bloodhounds, numbering about twelve, which were plaoedon duty generally about four oclock in tbe morning. Nevertheless, tbe guard was so weak, or bad so many Union men among them, that prisoners frequently escaped. Tbe rations were poor in quality aod small in quantity, but the men were good health and bad no hospital. At the time Mr Bargees escaped twenty others got oat st night between the sentinels. is the opinion of Mr.

Bargess, alter all he has seen of the people and soldiers of rebeldom, that very large majority despair of the Confederate cause, aud heartily desire the restoration of Federal authority.
