Committee lie ran for the Senate In I960 and was defeated in the Republican primary He returned to the House this year was assigned to membership on the Committee on" Legal Affairs In the 1959 session Earles gained respect not only for his activity on the i a nt Judiciary Committee but also as an advocate or opponent of legislation on the floor of the House A soft-spoken man tall balding slightly hard of hearing and in uncertain health because of his wartime service Earles commanded attention when he spoke His speeches were serious and without oratory but were often enlivened by flashes of wry humor He was mentioned by a legislative columnist that year as the House member who had most dis-tmguished himself The writer Leonard -J Cohen of Portland said: persuasive witty he gained a reputation as a speaker who could influence the House and who commanded respect even when he lost Gov Reed said in a statement he was shocked and saddened by the tragedy Earles and I formerly served together in the Legislature where he was a dedicated and respected member" the governor said State House family joins me in mourning the untimely loss of a friend and man who served his constituency and the entire State of Maine well during his career in public Rep Bradford Wellman R-Bangor the House majority lead er said the House will feel the loss of valuable legislator in his fourth session It is a loss to state government to lose a man with that kind of Speaker David Kennedy commented that members are shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the accident Rep Earles was an able and conscien tious legislator always having in mind the best interests of the people of Maine a truly dedicated citizen and For a short distance it runs parallel to Route 69 at the outlet of Patten Pond It passes very close to the junction of Routes 202 and 69 at West Hampden and crosses Route 1A at the Penoj scot-Waldo County line After crossing the Penobscot River at Cove-it goes directly over South Orrington As it passes through die Bucks port area it passes just northeast of Jacob Buck Pond and 3 northeast of the East Bucksport Church It brushes die southwest tip of Rocky Pond and crosses Route 1 22 miles east of the Orland-EHsworth line at Birch Grove Cemetery in West Ells worth About a mile farther east the central line is very nearly tangent to a curve in the road near Motel Route 230 is intersected 39 miles south of its junction with Route 1 in Ellsworth and Route 3 is crossed 7 mile south of the Trenton Drive-In Theater The line crosses Mount Desert Narrows at Point and is almost coincident with Route 3 for about a mile just before reaching Salisbury Cove After passing Hulls Cove the line again becomes practically coincident with Route 3 up to the beginning of the Bar Harbor business district which it cuts diagonally across passing very near the headquarters of Acadia National Park It goes out to sea through Cromwell Cove just grazing the southern tip of Egg Rock and missing the parking space at Schoodic Peninsula by only 12 miles The southern edge of the path of totality may be determined by taking a Maine map and drawing a line from a point about four miles northeast of the junction of the Maine New Hampshire and Quebec borders through the town of Stonington on the coast This line will pass just northeast of Waterville and just south of Belfast The northern edge of the totality path runs from Armstrong Que to Jonesport passing just south of Rockwood on Moose-head Lake It also passes through Milo and Columbia where it crosses Route 1 in
